On November 6, 2012, voters in Orange County approved a one-half cent sales tax for local and regional bus improvements and a proposed 17-mile light rail line from Chapel Hill to East Durham.  Durham voters approved the sales tax in November 2011.
 

In December 2012, Commissioners in Durham and Orange counties asked the Triangle Transit Board of Trustees to establish the Durham-Orange Tax District and authorize the levy of a one-half cent sales tax.   Triangle Transit’s Board approved the levy on December 13, 2012.   The effective date of the sales tax in the two counties is April 1, 2013.
