List of Raleigh train stations pitched: Proposal includes stops on N.C. State campus, in North Ralei
RALEIGH -- A City Council appointed transit board has weighed in on a list of possible locations for train stations in Raleigh, endorsing some city staff proposals and deferring on others.
The Passenger Rail Task Force brought a resolution to the council last week outlining its position on Triangle Transit Authority train station sites in Raleigh, which were developed by Triangle Transit and city staffers.
The group supported most of the proposed sites, including two stops on N.C. State's campus, several west Raleigh locations and stations on Millbrook and Spring Forest roads in North Raleigh.
"I thought they were right on line," said Councilwoman Mary-Ann Baldwin, who also is on Triangle Transit's board of trustees.
"Certainly, we need two stops on the N.C. State campus. I think they did a good job."
The task force endorsed:
A west Raleigh station at Corporate Center Drive.
A station at Jones Franklin Road, emphasizing that both the West Raleigh and Jones Franklin Road station locations are necessary to serve the growing area of the city.
A station location at Gorman Street
Two station locations to serve North Carolina State University - one at Dan Allen Drive and one at Pullen Road.
A location at Whitaker Mill Road
The station locations at New Hope Road, Millbrook Road and Spring Forest Road
The N.C. State Fairgrounds station in the vicinity of Blue Ridge Road and the fairgrounds main entrance.
The 10-member task force was appointed in May to advise the council on future rail options.
Because it lacked "sufficient data," the group deferred endorsement of station locations on Six Forks Road, Old Wake Forest Road and between West Morgan Street and North Blount Street.
The resolution came at the same time the task force endorsed proposed east-west commuter rail routes that would stretch across the Triangle, and make several stops in Raleigh.
